Miriam Ezenwa, Ph.D., R.N.
Miriam Ezenwa, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, an associate professor, was inducted as an American Academy of Nursing fellow. The academy is composed of more than 2,400 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research. Ezenwa joins 18 current and emeritus faculty members within the UF College of Nursing who hold the title of fellow with the academy.
Scott Rivkees, M.D.
Scott Rivkees, M.D., chair of the UF College of Medicine’s department of pediatrics and physician-in-chief of the UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, was named the first pediatric endocrinologist to receive the Paul Starr Award from the American Thyroid Association.
Rivkees also received the Special Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He helped create the annual Pediatric Medical Student Research Forum, which brings together medical students from around the nation to present their pediatric-related research.
Ramzi Salloum, Ph.D., and Ju Han, Ph.D. student
Ju Han, a Ph.D. student mentored by Dr. Ramzi Salloum, received the 2019 Electra Paskett Travel Award. The abstract title is Negative Affect and Utilization of Evidence-Based Tobacco Treatment among Adults with Cancer.
Jaclyn Hall, Ph.D.
Dr. Jaclyn Hall and a team of UFHCC researchers presented their study on health disparities increased when dollar stores started selling tobacco products at the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco 2019 Annual Meeting.
Walter O'Dell, Ph.D., and Shoba Abraham
Shoba Abraham, an undergraduate student under Dr. Walter O’Dell was awarded into the UF Emerging Scholars Program for 2019.
Zsolt Toth, Ph.D.
Dr. Zsolt Toth was awarded a grant of $792,000 by the American Cancer Society for his study Controlling the Establishment of Oncogenic Herpesviral Infection.
Lizi Wu, Ph.D.
Dr. Lizi Wu was awarded a grant of $228,000 a year by the National Cancer Institute for her study, Aberrant CRTC activation as a unique vulnerability of lung cancer with LKB1 inactivation.
John Wingard, M.D.
Dr. John Wingard was awarded the 2018 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics for being in the top 1 percent of most-cited reports in one’s field during the year of publication.
Bradford Hoppe, M.D, M.P.H.
Dr. Bradford Hoppe co-chaired the inaugural American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG) education session of radiotherapy in hematologic malignancies.
Merry-Jennifer Markham, M.D.
Dr. Merry-Jennifer Markham co-authored a publication titled “Clinical Cancer Advances 2019: Annual Report on Progress Against Cancer From the American Society of Clinical Oncology.” It was published in an American Society of Clinical Oncology Journal.
Thomas George, M.D., FACP
Dr. Thomas George was featured in a Forbes article, How Social Media Can Advance Cancer Research. He says, “NRG Oncology recognizes the need to engage patients where they are – which today, often includes social media.”
Dr. George also gave a lecture at the 2019 Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium on total neoadjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer.

Gator Nursing shows support for faculty members battle with cancer
After 16 years of remission, UF nursing faculty member Dr. Allison Peters recently discovered that her cancer had returned. To show their support, all 120 nursing seniors wore pink to class on Jan. 31 and presented her with cards and gifts. Way to show your support, Gator Nursing seniors!
Florida Gators Gymnastics Link to Pink
Florida Gators Gymnastics fans were fantastic in their support of the UF Health Cancer Center, breast cancer patients and their families at the Link to Pink gymnastics meet on Friday, Feb. 8. The cancer center showed our appreciation by handing out 5,000 pink shakers to the fans so they could cheer on the Lady Gators! The gymnasts were successful in the meet, beating Alabama Crimson Tide with a score of 197.325. Way to go team! #ChompCancer
