Research
Dr. Crispen is a urologic oncologist who specializes in the surgical treatment of cancers involving the kidney, bladder, prostate, testis and penis. His research interest is primarily related to improving the evaluation and treatment of patients presenting with genitourinary malignancies. To date, most of his research effort has focused on the management of bladder and kidney cancer.
What are your current research interests and/or what is a project you are currently working on?
My primary research interest focuses on bladder cancer, including clinical and basic science research. Our multidisciplinary clinical program has placed an emphasis on bladder preservation therapy through participation in several national clinical trials offering patients therapy to decrease progression and alternatives to surgery in carefully selected cases. Our team is actively engaged in basic science research through collaboration with Dr. Sergei Kusmartsev, where we are exploring mechanisms to improve the immune system’s ability to identify and eradicate cancers.
Who or what has inspired you to pursue this career?
My father was my greatest inspiration to become a physician. He is a pathologist and he always impressed me his with continued commitment and passion for medicine. After deciding on becoming a physician, my grandfather’s own battle with prostate cancer inspired me to become a Urologic Oncologist.
What do you want to achieve with your work and/or in your career?
My primary goal is to improve the way in which we evaluate and treat urologic malignancies every day. I hope to accomplish this with individual patients we care for at UF Health and patients across the country through our research efforts.
