Event Recap
11th Annual Rural Tobacco Summit
This past May, the Suwannee River Area Health Education Center hosted its annual Rural Tobacco Summit. The summit discussed solutions to tobacco use disparities in rural communities. The Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the UF Health Cancer Center worked as a broker to bring two UF cancer researchers, Ramzi Salloum, Ph.D. and Jaclyn Hall, Ph.D., to speak at the summit.
Dr. Salloum presented his research on how inserts in tobacco packages have been successful in other countries. Currently, the FDA has full regulation over package inserts. Dr. Hall talked about correlations between the budget stores Family Dollar and Dollar General selling tobacco and tobacco use in rural communities. She found that there is a positive correlation between the two stores selling tobacco and women smoking during pregnancy.
The summit also discussed system changes in rural hospitals, updates from the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco and electronic nicotine delivery systems such as the JUUL. Overall, the summit was a success and will ultimately help hospital administrators and clinicians alike work through rural tobacco issues.
