Honors, Awards + Achievements
Congratulations
Loic Deleyrolle, Ph.D., & Elias Sayour, M.D., Ph.D.
Drs. Loic Deleyrolle and Elias Sayour have both received grants from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Deleyrolle was awarded a $100,000 St. Baldrick’s research grant in July for a yearlong research project that has the goal of enhancing the T cell’s ability to compete for glucose to achieve greater anti-tumor immunity. Sayour was first awarded the $75,000 grant in 2016 and, based on progress to date, he was awarded an extension in 2019 to fund an additional year. Sayour’s research focuses on methods to harness the immune system to destroy brain tumors though the use of nanoparticle vaccines.

TRISH is charged by the NASA Human Research Program through a cooperative agreement to solicit high-risk, high-reward projects to resolve risks to human spaceflight. The panel gathers together proposed research to develop and validate detectors/biomarkers of biological damage due to space radiation, including oncogenesis, cardiac and brain effects. He attended a one-day meeting in Crystal City, Virginia in late July.
Steven Swarts, Ph.D.
Dr. Steven Swarts, along with Dr. Okunieff presented at the RITN (Radiation Injury Treatment Network) meeting in Arlington Virginia July 30-31; the theme was “Minding the gaps in medical preparedness for a Rad/Nuke incident.” Dr. Okunieff’s talk was entitled “Circulating Cell-Free DNA (cfDNA) Correlates with Integral Dose and Identifies Subjects Who Develop Gastrointestinal Toxicity;” Dr. Swarts’ talk was entitled “Fibroblast growth factors as mitigation agents of acute gastrointestinal syndrome.” More information can be found here: https://ritn.net/meetings/

James Bates, M.D.
A manuscript by UF Radiation Oncology Chief Resident Dr. James Bates, “Therapy-Related Cardiac Risk in Childhood Cancer Survivors: An Analysis of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study,” has scored among the top three articles submitted for the ASTRO 2019 Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) Publication Award. The article will be recognized with an “Honorable Mention” by the organization. Dr. Bates’s work will also be highlighted at the ROI’s “Celebration of Giving” reception on Sept. 15 at the Marriott Marquis hotel.
Andrea Riner, M.D.
Dr. Andrea Riner has been selected to receive a Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). The award supports Dr. Riner’s attendance at the 12th AACR Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved.
