Research
Dr. Chatzel’s clinical and research interests include the care of patients with genitourinary cancers, including cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate and testis. He believes strongly in delivering individualized care to each of his patients.
What are your current research interests and/or what is a project you are currently working on?
My primary interest is in genitourinary malignancies, including cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder and testis. At UF, we have recently opened trials that offer immunotherapy to certain patients with kidney and bladder cancer after they have had their tumors removed, with the idea that we can help to keep their cancers from coming back. Immunotherapy has been an incredible advance in cancer care, and I am very interested to see whether immunotherapy can be used in new roles or with other types of treatments.
Why did you decide to focus on cancer?
For our patients, facing a new diagnosis of cancer can be incredibly stressful and frightening, and I am constantly impressed by their courage and strength. At UF, I am also able to be a part of the effort to advance the standard of cancer care by offering our patients clinical trial options. Finally, in caring for patients with cancer, I get to work with a tremendous interdisciplinary team consisting of not only my colleagues in medical oncology but also colleagues in urology, radiation oncology, supportive care, pathology, radiology and a wide variety of other disciplines.
What excites you about your work?
In genitourinary oncology, we use a wide range of new treatments, including immunotherapy, antibody-drug conjugates that target chemotherapy to cancer cells and novel targeted therapies. It is tremendously exciting to see how rapidly the field is evolving and to be able to offer these new advances to our patients.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to listen to music, spend time outdoors, travel and relax with my cats, Bonnie and Clyde.
