Thomas J. George, Jr., M.D., FACP, was highlighted during the keynote session of the Association of American Cancer Institutes’ Clinical Research Innovation Annual Meeting.

David Tran, M.D., Ph.D., was chosen as a recipient of the 2020 AACR-Novocure Tumor Treating Fields Research Grants for his study titled, “Molecular mechanism of resistance to Tumor Treating Fields in glioblastoma.”

Roy Curtiss III, Ph.D., a professor in the department of infectious diseases and immunology, has received the 2020 Distinguished Veterinary Microbiologist Award from the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, a national organization that provides certification of veterinarians with special expertise in microbiology.

Christopher McCarty, Ph.D., has received a grant from the National Science Foundation for his study titled “Research Data Centers: Florida Research Data Center.”

Ting-Yuan (David) Cheng, Ph.D., has been awarded the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute Health Initiative Pilot Fund for his study titled “Body composition and high-plex protein expression profiling to inform breast cancer therapy and prognosis: A pilot study in OneFlorida.”

Lisa Scarton, Ph.D., B.S.N., was named the UF Health Cancer Center CPS Pilot Awardee for her study titled “A Nurse Led Intervention in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes: A RCT Pilot Study.”

Andrew Judge, Ph.D., has been promoted to professor in the College of Public Health and Health Professions’ department of physical therapy.

Walter O’Dell, Ph.D., has been promoted to associate professor in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering’s J. Crayton Pruitt Family department of biomedical engineering.

Folakemi Odedina, Ph.D., was elected to serve on AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research Council 2020-2023 term. Dr. Odedina also received $1.2 million from the National Cancer Institute to partner with Florida A&M University to support minority graduate students interested in studying racial health disparities.

Brian K. Law, Ph.D., received an R21 National Cancer Institute grant for his study titled “Regulation of Death Receptor 5 folding and apoptotic signaling by AGR2.”

Natalie Silver, M.D., received a grant from the Ocala Royal Dames for her study titled “Translating Personalized RNA Nanoparticle Vaccines for Oral Cancer.”

Chenglong Li, Ph.D., received a training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for his training program titled “Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program at the University of Florida.”

Lizi Wu, Ph.D., received a renewal for her R01 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for her study titled “Signaling and Targeting of CRTC1-MAML2 Fusion Oncoprotein in Salivary Gland.”

Piyush Jain, Ph.D., received a grant from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation for his study titled “Early Detection of Breast Cancer in the Urine using CRISPR.”

Arun Srivastava, Ph.D., was appointed a member of the Gene Therapy Resource Program’s Scientific Review Board in the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Carla Fisher, Ph.D., and Carma Bylund, Ph.D., were awarded the UF Health Cancer Center CPS Pilot Awardee grant for their study titled “Developing a Healthy Communication Practice (HCP) Toolkit for Mothers Diagnosed with Breast Cancer and Their Young-Adult Daughter Caregivers.”

Andrew Judge, Ph.D., Thomas J George, Jr., M.D., FACP, and Saun-Joo Yoon, Ph.D., R.N., were awarded the UF Health Cancer Center CPS Pilot Awardee grant for their study titled “Correlates between physical and biophysiological markers: Prognostic factors associated with early detection of cancer cachexia in gastrointestinal cancer patients.”

Patrick Kellish, a senior student in the Cancer Biology Concentration, mentored by Dr. Maria Zajac-Kaye, was awarded the Gold Medal at the recent Medical Guild Research Competition for his research entitled “Priming immunity against small cell lung cancer (SCLC) with oncolytic virotherapy.”
